“The burden of all masters is to watch students move past them” - Yoda
Matching each student with the right tutor is a critical process. A student-tutor relationship that is built on trust, mutual respect, compassion, and positivity will yield an extremely effective environment for growth.
Qualities we are looking for include:
Well-balanced: Most students are always juggling; whether it’s classes and sports, classes and hobbies, or classes and more classes, one of the main challenges students face is managing their time effectively. Tutors who engage in extra-curricular activities understand this juggling act and know how to be efficient, and this is a key quality to pass on to students.
Good students: We believe that good teachers must also be good students. Good students love to learn, know how to effectively listen, confidently ask questions, and maintain a positive attitude. Curriculums often change from school to school or from year to year, so tutors must remain open to new ways of teaching. Every student learns differently, so the tutor must pinpoint where each student needs help then deliver a tailored solution.
Positivity: Tutors must be enjoyable to work with! Students are in school for a significant amount of time, and it takes a lot of willpower to keep focusing after a long day. A key goal of tutoring is to help students feel less stressed, so the tutor must be a source of light and positivity for the student. It doesn’t hurt to make some jokes, inquire about the student’s day, and find some common ground. Students should enjoy tutoring!
Humility: Tutors must be able to empathize with and connect to student problems and concerns. Tutors that act like they know everything are often intimidating to work with for the student, and this leads to worse communication. Instead, tutors that admit when they don’t know something and share experiences of times they struggled are more likely to build an environment where students are comfortable to ask questions.
